The nineteenth edition of the QS World University Rankings is now available. The ranking of institutions in Canada has remained stable over the past five years.
For the rest of the world, countries such as China and Malaysia are steadily ascending, while the United States dominates the top 10 with five universities, but the total rankings continue to drop year after year.

This year’s rankings include more than 1,400 institutions across 100 sites, the most ever. Therefore, let’s examine which universities are the best in Canada in 2023.
1. MCGILL UNIVERSITY
According to QS, McGill is the top university in Canada. This is the first time in the past five years that McGill is the top-ranked university in Canada.
Its position in the rankings is supported by stable performance across all QS measures. Specifically, in terms of research, it exceeds Canada’s other two top universities.
It ranks 203rd in the world for Citations per Faculty, behind the University of Toronto and the University of British Columbia, which respectively rank 313th and 332nd.
The McGill University is the thirty-first-ranked university in the world.
2. University of Toronto
In the most recent edition of the QS University Rankings, the University of Toronto in Canada was rated first. Nevertheless, it remained among the top 50 universities worldwide. The University of Toronto was ranked 34 internationally.
The average score for all internationalisation indicators at the University of Toronto was 95,5 percent. The university has a solid reputation, exceeding over 100 points (99.6).
This score has a direct impact on the university’s reputation among employers. Toronto scored 98.3 points.
3. UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA
Over the past decade, the University of British Columbia has maintained a virtually stable standing internationally. In the nineteenth edition of the QS university rankings, it ranked 47th worldwide.
UBC performed the best on three indicators: Academic Reputation (98 points), International Research Network (97.9 points), and Employer Reputation (95.5 points).
4. UNIVERSITY OF ALBERTA
In the 19th edition of the QS World University Rankings, the University of Alberta climbed 16 spots to 110th rank, mostly due to considerable advances in key indices of international reputation. The University of Alberta moved up in the local rankings, surpassing the University of Montréal.
The rise in the rankings is due to improvements in a number of significant categories, such as academic reputation (up three positions to 139th), employer reputation (up 11 spots to 181st), and citations per faculty member (up 20 spots to 237th). The University of Alberta jumped 21 places in the category of faculty-to-student ratio.
5. UNIVERSITY OF MONTRÉAL
This year, UofM was placed 116th globally and fifth in Canada by QS. This is a decline worldwide and locally compared to the previous year, as it fell from 111th in the world to fourth in Canada.
Each year, the University of Montreal receives more than $500 million in research funding, making it one of the leading university research hubs in Canada.
The University of Michigan received the highest marks for “International Faculty Ratio” (89.5) and “International Research Network” (100). (86). Regarding “Employer Reputation,” the university scored poorly in comparison to its peers worldwide (47.2).
6. MCMASTER UNIVERSITY
This 19th edition of the QS University Rankings places McMaster at position 152, a twelve-place drop from the previous edition. Since the change in ranking methodology at the beginning of this decade, McMaster has always been within the top 200.
In fact, McMaster’s International Faculty Ratio received its best score of 99.3 points (from 100). Faculty Student Ratio, at 84.7 points, has the second-highest performance score.
7. UNIVERSITY OF WATERLOO
Locally ranked seventh in Canada in the 2023 QS World University Rankings, the University of Waterloo fell five places to 154.
The Rankings revealed that the University did poorly in terms of Faculty Student Ratio, receiving only 7 out of 100 points.
All other variables also contributed to this year’s favourable outcome with outstanding outcomes.
International Faculty Ratio, International Student Ratio, and International Research Network were all areas in which the University of Waterloo did admirably.
In addition, Waterloo scored 88 out of a possible 100 points for its Employment Outcomes.
8. WESTERN UNIVERSITY
The 2023 QS ranked Western 172nd in the world, a two-spot decline from its previous ranking.
International Faculty Ratio was where Western University scored the highest, with a score of nearly 100 percent. It scored 96.9 out of a possible 100 points for the indication of Citations per Faculty, and 86 points for the International Research Network.
9. UNIVERSITY OF OTTAWA
University of Ottawa was ranked 237, a decline from the previous year’s ranking of 230. The University of Ottawa performed the best on international-focused measures.
The university scored above 90 marks for its International Research Network and International Faculty Ratio proportions. International Students Ratio was a significant factor as well.
The university’s results for citations per faculty were likewise three times the global median, with 80,3 points.
10. UNIVERSITY OF CALGARY
The University of Calgary dropped from 235 to 242 and is ranked as the tenth best institution in Canada.
The University of Chicago scored highest in international faculty ratio and international research network, and lowest in faculty to student ratio and academic reputation, which account for 40 percent of the total grade. The University of Chicago received a total score of 39 out of 100.
