10. Jeff Agoos

Jeff Agoos ranks second only to Landon Donovan in terms of MLS Cup triumphs. Having won five MLS Cups, he is recognized as one of the best defenders in MLS history (three with D.C. United and two with the San Jose Earthquakes). Additionally, Agoos contributed to his team’s victories in the Supporters’ Shield and the US Open Cup. In 2001, he was named MLS Defender of the Year and was named to the MLS Best XI three times. The National Soccer Hall of Fame inducted Agoos in 2001.
9. Etcheverry, Marco

Marco Etcheverry is considered to be one of Bolivia’s greatest players of all time and one of the league’s initial superstars. From 1996 through 2003, Etcheverry was a member of D.C. United, during which time he helped the team win eight major championships. Etcheverry played predominantly as an offensive midfielder for D.C. United, where he racked up over 100 assists.
8. David Villa

David Villa is another superstar who should be ranked among the best 10 MLS players of all time. Despite having spent only four years in New York City, Villa scored 82 goals in 130 appearances for the club. In his second season in the league, he was voted MLS MVP after instantly contributing to New York’s bid for a postseason berth.
7. Dwayne De Rosario

Over the course of his fifteen-year career, De Rosario played for five different MLS clubs and won four MLS titles. Dwayne De Rosario had one of the longest MLS careers in history, with 343 games, despite being overshadowed by notable European players during his prime. De Rosario is the seventh-leading scorer in MLS history with 106 goals, and he has one MVP award.
6. Jaime Moreno

Jaime Moreno was the all-time leader in goals scored in Major League Soccer when he retired in 2010, and he was the first player in league history to record 100 goals and provide 100 assists in 2009. He was honored in 2013 by being inducted into the DC United Hall of Tradition.
Moreno has scored 134 goals in 329 matches and has been nominated to the MLS Best XI on five occasions. He ranks fourth on the all-time scoring list and sixth on the all-time assist list. The Bolivian is one of the league’s most prominent players with four MLS Cup victories to his credit.
5. Diego Valeri

For the Portland Timbers, Diego Valeri is a legendary player. He has played in 223 games for the Timbers, scoring 84 goals and guiding them to the 2015 MLS Cup. Valeri is a superb player whose services to the Portland Timbers will be fondly remembered by the team’s fans.
Valeri’s most memorable season occurred in 2017 when he single-handedly led his team to the playoffs by scoring 20 goals and assisted on 10 goals. He ranks first in goals and assists for the team. Valeri is a three-time selection to the MLS Best XI, having won the MLS Cup in 2015 and the MLS MVP award in 2017.
4. Wondolowski, Chris

Chris Wondolowski has played for five separate Major League Soccer clubs (San Jose Earthquakes, Houston Dynamo, Toronto FC, New York Red Bulls, and D.C. United). Chris Wondolowski, who has scored 104 goals, is a player you’d rather have on your team than face.
He is the all-time leader in goals scored in Major League Soccer and the first player to score ten or more goals in each of the last ten seasons. Wondolowski won the MLS MVP award in 2012, and as of March 2021, he has scored 162 goals with the San Jose Earthquakes, making him their all-time leading scorer. Wondo has won the MLS Cup twice, the MLS Golden Boot twice, and has been named to the MLS Best XI three times.
3. Eddie Pope

Eddie Pope made 254 appearances in Major League Soccer during his whole career. He played for three different teams (D.C. United, Metrostars, and Real Salt Lake), but his stint with D.C. United is most fondly remembered.
The gifted defender rose to fame in the Major League Soccer very quickly. When Pope scored the game-winning goal during D.C. United’s first MLS Cup victory in 1996, he established his place as a club icon. He won three MLS Cups and was named MLS Defender of the Year in 1997. 2011 saw the induction of the four-time MLS Best Eleven into the National Soccer Hall of Fame.
2. Sebastian Giovinco

The bulk of European players opt to play in Major League Soccer at the conclusion of their careers. On the contrary, Sebastian Giovinco is the antithesis. In 2015, at age 28, he signed with the Toronto F.C.
After earning a contract that made him the highest-paid player in the MLS, Giovinco quickly established himself as one of the league’s elite players. Before leaving the club in 2019 for Al-Hilal, he scored 68 goals in 114 appearances over four seasons to become the club’s all-time leading scorer.

Landon Donovan is regarded by many as one of the best American football players of all time. Despite his ability and aptitude, Donovan played in Major League Soccer for nearly a decade and a half, becoming the league’s most successful player.
In addition to a league-record six MLS Cup trophies, he received numerous individual accolades, including seven Honda Player of the Year awards. On January 15, 2015, the MLS renamed its MVP award in Landon’s honor in recognition of his commitment to the MLS and American football in general.
