Due to the Covid-19 pandemic and the 2022 FIFA World Cup being held in the winter, the year 2023 will be jam-packed with football tournaments.
Because of the aforementioned reasons, the majority of these tournaments were rescheduled for 2023.
In this article, we brings you the men’s football tournament coming up next year.
1. CHAN 2022
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) will host the 7th edition of the biennial African Nations Championship (CHAN) in 2022. (CAF).
The competition features national teams made up of (only) players who are currently competing in their respective local leagues.
The tournament will be held in Algeria from the 13th of January to the 4th of February 2023.
It was originally scheduled to take place from July 10th to August 1st, 2022, but CAF rescheduled it to January 2023 after an announcement at an executive committee meeting in September 2020.
CAF cited the 2020 tournament’s postponement to 2021, as well as the 2021 AFCON’s postponement to 2022 (due to the COVID-19 pandemic in Africa) as reasons.
The 2022 FIFA World Cup, which will be held from November to December 2022, is also being considered.
2. South American U-20
Championship in 2023
The South American U-20 Championship in 2023 will be the tournament’s 30th edition.
It is a biennial international youth football championship organised by CONMEBOL for South American men’s under-20 national teams.
It will take place in Colombia between January 19th and February 12th, 2023.
This tournament will feature the best South American football prospects.
Furthermore, due to the cancellation of the 2021 edition, the tournament returns after four years.
The South American U-20 Championship in 2023 will serve as a qualifying event for two international events:
I The top four teams will qualify as CONMEBOL representatives for the FIFA U-20 World Cup in Indonesia in 2023.
(ii) In addition to Chile, who automatically qualified as hosts, the top three teams will qualify for the Pan American Games men’s football tournament in 2023.
Ecuador is the current defending champion.
3. Copa Libertadores 2023
The 2023 Copa Libertadores will be the 64th edition of CONMEBOL’s premier club football tournament in South America.
The tournament will take place from February 7th to November 11th, 2023.
The competition will feature 47 teams from ten CONMEBOL member countries.
Whoever wins the 2023 Copa Libertadores will be eligible to compete in the 2024 Recopa Sudamericana against the winners of the 2023 Copa Sudamericana.
Furthermore, they will be automatically qualified for the Copa Libertadores group stage in 2024.
Flamengo are the current champions.
4. CONCACAF U-17 Championship in 2023
The 2023 CONCACAF U-17 Championship will be the eighth edition of CONCACAF’s men’s under-17 international football tournament.
Guatemala will host it from February 11th to February 26th, 2023.
The top four teams will automatically qualify as CONCACAF representatives for the FIFA U-17 World Cup in Peru in 2023.
5. AFCON U-20 in 2023
The 2023 Africa U-20 Cup of Nations will be the 17th edition (24th if non-host tournaments are included) of CAF’s biennial international youth football tournament for players aged 20 and under.
Egypt will host it from the 18th of February to the 12th of March 2023.
It will feature 12 nations, with the top four teams qualifying for the FIFA U-20 World Cup, which will be held in Indonesia later that year.
Some of the most talented young African football talents will compete in this upcoming football competition in 2023.
Ghana is the defending champion, having won their fourth title in 2021 — but they will not defend after failing to qualify for the tournament.
6. AFC U-20 Asian Cup in 2023
The 41st edition of the biennial international youth football championship organised by the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) for Asia’s men’s under-20 national teams will take place in 2023.
The AFC proposed changing the tournament from U-19 to U-20 in 2023, so this edition will be the first to be played as an under-20 tournament.
Furthermore, following the cancellation of the 2020 AFC U-19 Championship due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Uzbekistan would retain hosting rights for the 2023 edition.
It will take place from March 1st to March 18th, 2023, and will feature 16 teams.
This prestigious youth football competition will feature young Asian football talents.
The top four teams in the tournament will advance to the FIFA U-20 World Cup in Indonesia in 2023.
Furthermore, Saudi Arabia holds the title, having won it in 2018.
7. Copa Sudamericana 2023
The Copa CONMEBOL Sudamericana 2023 will be the 22nd edition of CONMEBOL’s South American secondary club football tournament.
It will begin on March 7, 2023, and end on October 28, 2023.
The winners of the 2023 Copa Sudamericana will compete in the 2024 Recopa Sudamericana against the winners of the 2023 Copa Libertadores.
Furthermore, they will be automatically qualified for the Copa Libertadores group stage in 2024.
The current champions are Independiente del Valle, but because they qualified for the Copa Libertadores group stage as Copa Sudamericana champions, they will only be able to defend their title if they finish third in their Copa Libertadores group.
8. South American U-17
Championship in 2023
The 2023 South American U-17 Championship will be the 19th edition of CONMEBOL’s biennial international youth football championship for South American men’s under-17 national teams.
It will be held in Ecuador between March 30th and April 23rd, 2023, and will return after 4 years due to the cancellation of the 2021 edition.
The tournament, like previous editions, will serve as a CONMEBOL qualifier for the 2023 FIFA U-17 World Cup.
Aside from Peru, which qualified automatically as hosts, the final four teams in the tournament will qualify for the 2023 FIFA U-17 World Cup in Peru as CONMEBOL representatives.
If Peru finishes in the top four, the fifth-placed team will also qualify for the FIFA U-17 World Cup in 2023.
Argentina is the reigning champion.
9. U-17 AFCON 2023
The U-17 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2023 will be the 15th edition of CAF’s biennial international youth football tournament for players aged 17 and under.
Algeria would host the event. It will feature 12 teams, with the top four teams qualifying for the FIFA U-17 World Cup in Peru in 2023.
Cameroon is the defending champion, having won the 2019 edition due to the cancellation of the 2021 edition.
10. UEFA Youth League in 2022/23
The 2022/23 UEFA Youth League is the ninth season of the UEFA Youth League, a UEFA-organized European youth club football competition.
The final will take place on April 24, 2023, at Colovray Stadium in Nyon, Switzerland.
