It might be an entirely different situation by the end of 2022, when all the film-festival fare has been released and you can not avoid Oscar bait. However, at least for the first six months of the year? Action films are unrivalled in their dominance.
It is as if the movie gods are aware of what moviegoers have through over the past few years, missing out on the big-screen experience because to COVID-19, and they have lavished upon us bountiful, exploding, eye-popping treasures.

Michelle Yeoh shines as an improbable multiverse-hopping heroine, Batman scores a triumphant return, 10th-century Vikings are having a moment, Tom Cruise is back in the cockpit for a “Top Gun” sequel that, believe it or not, surpasses 36 years, and an Indian film is a joyous, jaw-dropping game-changer on par with “Mad Max: Fury Road.”
Consequently, among the year’s most popular films, there are several truly excellent action movies. Here’s a definite ranking of the top films of 2022 thus far:
10. Turning Red
In a touching way, the animated comedy tackles a common part of people’s lives—in this case, female puberty—just like the best Pixar originals. Domee Shi’s amusing and uplifting homage to monster movies, boy bands from the 2000s, Asian culture, and growing up features a Toronto adolescent (voiced by Rosalie Chiang) who wakes up to find that she transforms into an 8-foot-tall huge red panda when she gets extremely excited.

9. Master
Director Mariama Diallo’s excellent social horror film, which is set at a prestigious New England college built on land where a Salem-era witch was hanged, stars Regina Hall as the new dean of students who is plagued by unsettling visions and Zoe Renee as a freshman put in a rumoured haunted dorm room. With lots of spooky frights, the twisting film explores institutional racism and white supremacy

8. Kimi
In Steven Soderbergh’s pandemic-era paranoia thriller, in which Zo Kravitz plays an agoraphobic tech worker entrusted with improving a company’s Alexa-like device, she pays homage to Hitchcock and “Home Alone,” while putting on a compelling performance. Her supervisors are informed that she has heard something she is not allowed to, which leads to her being forced to flee while evading COVID-19 and being killed.

7. The Northman
Director Robert Eggers makes really good, completely insane movies (“The Witch,” anyone?”) and makes his biggest impact to yet with an extremely violent Viking revenge fantasy. In a bizarre story involving Slavic witches, a gory ball game, and a naked sword duel on top of an active volcano, Alexander Skarsgrd plays a berzerker with simple life goals: avenge his father, save his mother (Nicole Kidman), and kill his uncle.

6. Cha Cha Real Smooth
It is unlikely that writer/director Cooper Raiff’s movie will travel the same path as “CODA.” which won the audience award at the Sundance Film Festival last year, all the way to the best picture Oscar. Raiff plays an aimless 22-year-old college graduate who starts to see that he is a party starter at bar mitzvahs and has a strong relationship with an older mom in the pleasantly unorthodox dramedy “Cha Cha” which is a similar feel-good charmer (Dakota Johnson).

5: Everything Everywhere All at Once
In this action-packed, multiverse-hopping genre mashup directed by Daniels, do not worry about having your brain fried and just go with the crazy flow (aka Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert). Yeoh shines as a laundromat owner whose tax problems are set aside when she receives a crash course in various universes (including one where she has hot dog fingers!) and must use what she learns from the lives of her other selves to stop a nihilistic antagonist.

4. In Top Gun: Maverick
directed by Joseph Kosinski, Cruise’s ever-defiant flyboy Maverick returns to find the best young fighter pilots for a risky mission, including the son (Miles Teller) of his late wingman. The sequel succeeds as a loving nostalgia trip and a rip-roaring airborne extravaganza. All the “Top Gun:” prerequisites are satisfied, but the film goes above and above to deliver a nerve-wracking story with a surprisingly warm ending.

3. The Fallout
A moving drama from director Megan Park, is about the aftermath of a school massacre. Jenna Ortega dazzles as an adolescent who loses touch with her family and friends but finds a new confidante in the girl (Maddie Ziegler) she was trapped in the toilet with when the carnage began. Given new significance in the wake of the massacres in Uvalde, Texas, the masterfully made movie conveys a sense of hope tempered by an unending cycle of bloodshed.

2. The Batman
The grandiose reinvention of the Bat-mythos by director Matt Reeves, stars both grimy Gotham City and the Dark Knight investigator. Reeves’ realistic approach colourfully reinvents certain pop-culture icons, like the serial killer Riddler (Paul Dano), spunky thief Catwoman (Zo Kravitz), and power-hungry mobster Penguin. In his second year of combating crime, Robert Pattinson plays the troubled man in the cape and cowl (Colin Farrell).

1. RRR
A boisterous and bromantic Indian musical epic set in the 1920s (but in Telugu), is the one film that everyone must watch. Imagine “Fast and Furious” and Marvel having a Bollywood kid. Three hours of outrageous adventure, high-stakes drama, genuine love, fantastic melodies, wild creatures, and even some dance fighting can be found in “RRR” which is an equal parts historical fiction and bonkers superhero story. Ram Charan portrays an officer in the English army who becomes his best friend but must make difficult choices regarding his loyalty, and N.T. Rama Rao Jr. plays a hulking warrior sent to Delhi to bring back a girl taken from his tribe by British colonialists.
