The fire, which destroyed the assembly’s holy chamber, reportedly began early on Monday morning and raged till 8 a.m., when a fire engine from Dangote Cement, Obajana, arrived to extinguish it.
On Monday, when speaking with reporters on the grounds of the assembly complex, the Speaker voiced grave worry over the occurrence.
He stated that he was unable to determine who was responsible for the fire outbreak.
“I can’t say categorically who might have been responsible. I will urge us to wait until the security operatives conclude their investigation and send us their reports.
A senior staff member of the assembly, who requested anonymity, speculated that the fire may have been caused by an explosive detonated by a suspected saboteur.
“Only an explosive can cause a crack in the wall such as the one in the hallow chamber,” he noted.
Later in the day, the state commissioner for information, Kingsley Fanwo, issued a statement confirming the occurrence and stating that security and technological specialists were working diligently to determine the cause(s) of the fire, which caused extensive damage to the complex.
“The State Government will inform the general public of the findings as they unfold.”
“We urge the general public to be calm, law abiding and resist the temptation of being lawless as the government is capable of dealing with the likely outcome of the investigations,” he added.
He added that the state administration will make temporary preparations to ensure that legislative action is not completely suspended by the regrettable tragedy.
