The state of Akwa Ibom is home to various artistic expressions. They are exceptionally gifted, creative, and talented in every artistic medium. In the Church and gospel context, there are Akwa Ibomites who are pulling strings and making a significant contribution to the music aspect, and in Nigeria, 80 to 90 percent of bands playing for top gospel artists currently include at least one Akwa Ibomite. A typical Akwa Ibomite has a high level of creativity. In this post, we will be exploring 10 different gospel musicians from Akwa Ibom, a State in the Southern part of Nigeria.

These two gentlemen wrote “Si’ma Do,” “Ebenezer,” and a slew of other songs. The twin brothers “David and Solomon” (Davasol Brothers) have been a source of pride for Akwa Ibom State. Their songs have been broadcast from all over the world, and they have travelled far and wide, singing the gospel and blessing many people.

Progress Effiong has twice performed at the Akwa Ibom State Christmas Carol Festival, the largest gospel music event in the state and one of the largest in Nigeria. Progress has used both national and international artists in his various projects. “Ama,” a song of gratitude with “Favour Paul Eno” on it, became a big anthem that every Akwa Ibomite could count on.
His song “Amen,” which is a prayer for God to bless Akwa Ibom, is one that will live on in the minds of all Akwa Ibomites. Its remix with Lybra and Ikpa Udo is the current rave at the time this article was written.

8. Bobby Friga

Conscience Ibanga, the industrious son of Mkpat Enin, has proven over time that our world is in our hands, with him deliberately pushing his career. He grew up in the church as a Son-Of-A-Preacher (he is a preacher’s son), where he developed his musical talent. In the early 2010s, he released an uptempo dance track titled “Sosongodoboho” (Thank you), which became a go-to track that received a lot of airplay, especially in his hometown of Uyo. In 2016, he released “Ameyaiya” (You’re Beautiful), a song about God’s beauty. This track grew by leaps and bounds, giving birth to a clothesline/ticketed concert in 2018.
Bobby Friga released “Owo’do” (That Man) in 2020, a track that has become a testament around the world, particularly to those of AkwaCross heritage and those who speak and understand Ibibio and Efik. There is no better way to express gratitude than to share it with others.
During the 2021 Akwa Ibom State Christmas Carols Festival, he led the entire world in thanking God for the sustenance during the pandemic, in particular.
7. Eno Michael

Her vivacious stage persona is not to be missed. Mama Aity has won numerous music awards, including one from AKISAN, an official group of Akwa Ibomites in diaspora.
“Adiaha Ikwo Akwa Ibom,” as she is affectionately known, has many songs to her credit, including “Iberedem Mmi,” “Bara Sune,” “Your Love is Higher,” “God is taking me somewhere,” and others.
5. Freke Umoh

Freke Umoh is one of Nigeria’s best stage performers. His energising and charismatic presence leaves no room for dull moments, as he understands the complexities and dynamics of performing arts and employs them to get everyone in the mood to dance. In the late 2000s, “Ibom Praise Project” was the largest gospel music event held at the Ibom Plaza in Uyo, and the name Freke Umoh always set her attendees in a dancing mood, which was the genesis of his career, and from there he has led thousands, if not millions, in live music performances in and outside Nigeria. “The Experience,” Nigeria’s largest gospel music event, is one of these platforms. During the 2014 edition of the event, dubbed “The Experience 9,” he led a powerful session.
He is also a regular at the Akwa Ibom State Christmas Carols Festival, where he has appeared in several editions.
Freke Umoh is from the State’s Ikono Local Government Area. He is happily married to a medical doctor and the father of three handsome ‘Freke-lets’.
4. Emmanuel Iren

Pastor Emmanuel Aniefiok Iren is the Lead Pastor of Celebration Church International, which has nine branches in Lagos, Port Harcourt, Abuja, the United Kingdom, and Canada. The Apostle is also the founder of Outburst Music Group, a Christian record label dedicated to producing Christ-centered music. His songs have topped various music charts both within and outside of Nigeria.
He began as a drummer in his local assembly and later pastored and currently features many gospel artists such as Dove Award-winning Sinach, Eben, Nosa, Judikay, and others. Here is a list of some of his works, including “Holy Ghost” with Sinach. “Power In Abundance” feat. Bajulaye Victor.
3. Moses Bliss

Christ Embassy is the home of 70 to 80% of Nigeria’s A, B, C, list (and so on) gospel music artistes, all thanks to Reverend Chris Oyakhilome’s enormous contribution to the gospel music industry in Nigeria. Fortunately for the Abuja-based, Akwa Ibom-born singer, Moses Bliss, whose song “You, I Live For” was loved by Pastor Chris, the song won him (Moses Bliss) the LIMA Award 2020 (an Award organised by Christ Embassy to celebrate their Creatives) and a cash prize of $100,000 in 2020.
Moses Bliss is Nigeria’s newest and youngest gospel music artist. His songs are receiving massive airplay all over the world, and he is also travelling to bless millions of people all over the world.
2. Jimmy D’Psalmist

On December 22, 2017, at the Uyo Township Stadium during the Akwa Ibom State Christmas Carols Festival, the entire stadium was saturated with an intense worship atmosphere as this Abuja-based ONNA-born, Jimmy D Psalmist, who is the 3rd son of A.M.E Zion Preacher (Rev. Dr. J. J. Essien), led in a beautiful session. With over 3 million streams and counting on Boomplay, “Mighty Man Of War” and other tracks like “Powerful Jesus,” “Consuming Fire,” “Ony’inyeakam,” and others have taken this Akwa Ibom son around the world, blessing many. He is happily married and the father of two beautiful children.
1. Nathaniel Bassey

When he resigned from a Jazz Band he was a part of that travelled the world, playing on big stages, on the grounds of hearing from God to do so, he was written off. Little did they know that from his debut single “Book of Life,” he would become one of Africa’s Gospel Music exports to the world. Many people adore him because of his simple yet amazing sing-along pieces. His trumpet lines in any of the songs he blows hit differently and can be compared to a direct sound from heaven. All eight of his studio albums, which include songs such as “Imela,” “Elohim,” and “Oh Jehovah,” have been worldwide hits, and he has toured extensively.
The Hallelujah Challenge (a yearly, one-hour Praise, Prayer, and Word Service held from 12 a.m. to 1 a.m. for one month) he started in June 2017 has garnered massive testimony from participants. Nathaniel Bassey has performed at “The Experience,” “Akwa Ibom State Christmas Carols Festival,” and other major events, concerts, and so on since he began his career.
Nathaniel Bassey is from Ikot Ofon Ikono, Akwa Ibom State’s Uyo Local Government Area. Married with children, he serves as Pastor of The Redeemed Christian Church of God, one of Nigeria’s largest Christian congregations.
